Fall 2014

2014 NSF Graduate Student Fellowship Award - Congratulations to grad student Miriam Kuzbary on being awarded a 2014 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship! These prestigious awards not only recognize and support outstanding graduate students during their education, but also anticipate that they will become leaders and innovators in their field. Christopher White, a 2013 Rice graduate currently studying physics at Caltech, was also awarded a Fellowship. Graduating seniors Nicholas Ryder and Karl Schaefer and 2010 graduate Robert Lewis all received Honorable Mentions.

Spring 2014

GSA Faculty Teaching and Mentoring Award - Honoring his commitment to graduate students and their education, the Rice Graduate Student Association awarded Tim Cochran one of this year’s “Faculty Teaching and Mentoring Awards”. These awards are given to members of the Rice faculty to honor their demonstrated commitment to graduate education through extraordinary dedication in teaching and mentoring.

May 17 - 101st Commencement - Congratulations to our 2014 graduates!

2014 Wolfe Lecture - Wolfe Lecture in Mathematics was presented by Assaf Naor, Courant Institute on April 25.

Annual Math Lecture Contest - Math Lecture Contest and movie "Fermat's Room" was held on April 12 in Herman Brown 227.

Professor Alexander Kiselev will join our Department next July - Alexander Kiselev of the University of Wisconsin will join the MATH department as a Professor in July 2014. Kiselev is a distinguished analyst who has made major contributions to spectral theory, fluid dynamics, and reaction-diffusion equations. He has held the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Sloan Research Fellowship, and been an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematical Physics. He is also a dedicated teacher, having advised numerous undergraduate research students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows.

New Fellows of the American Mathematical Society - Recognized by their peers as distinguished for their contributions to the mathematics profession, Professors Tim Cochran and Brendan Hassett have been elected to the 2014 class of Fellows. They join 7 colleagues from the Department who were elected last year. More from the Rice News ….

Professor Anthony Varilly-Alvarado awarded NSF CAREER Grant - Recognizing his accomplishments and future plans both as a researcher and a teacher, Dr. Varilly-Alvarado has been awarded a prestigious NSF CAREER grant. In addition to continuing his research in Arithmetic Geometry, the grant will fund a mathematics summer outreach program for middle school students. This is the third year in a row that one of our faculty has received one of these distinguished grants. More from the Rice News …

Department to offer B.S. in Mathematics Degree - The Rice Faculty Senate has approved a new BS degree in Mathematics effective this Fall (2014). The requirements for the new degree can be found here.
